The Monroe Township Police Department is trying to figure out if they should place a police officer on Schoolhouse road in front of the high school to deter speeders. They want to know the following things:
- How many cars travel down Schoolhouse Road in an hour?
- What is the average speed of a car on Schoolhouse Road?
- What percentage of the cars are speeding?
- If the average cost of a speeding ticket is $50 per 5 mph over the speed limit, how much money could the township make per hour if they could ticket all of the speeders?
- Do you think the police should put an officer on Schoolhouse road?
- What are some sources of error in the survey? Explain.
Your group will be given a stopwatch and ten minutes to observe the cars on Schoolhouse Road. When we return to the classroom your group will be given time to analyze your data. You may have to extrapolate and make estimations. Your group will be responsible for justifying your answers using logic and mathematics. Here are some facts to help you out:
- The distance between the seven large trees in the front of the building is 73 meters.
- There are 1609 meters in one mile.
- The speed limit on that part of Schoolhouse Road is 25 mph.
